Ten writers for children. All with something to say.

9/26/11

My summer reading tends to reflect what I've been doing lately, which is to help a friend study for her composition test (Dr. Faustus by Christopher Marlowe), join the Methodist church (Three Simple Rules by Rueben P. Job), and join a sci fi book club (A Case of Conscience by James Blish). Do I recommend any of these books? I'm sorry to say, no, but I, too, read A State of Wonder and loved it, as well as a Nora Roberts book about a woman and her search and rescue dog, aptly entitled, Search and Rescue. It has been a joy to read what I want to read after three years of studying for my master's! My next book will be The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett - once my husband finishes it!!

In reading back over my blog, I see that my sentence structure is faulty. It looks like I helped my friend study, join the church and join a sci fi book club. Not sure how to fix that without a great deal of effort on my part. Forgive my faulty wording please.

Diane,
I've read some other books this summer that I didn't mention in my post because I didn't necessarily recommend them. But, as writers, we learn from books we love, as well as from books we don't love. And it's also interesting to note how trends have changed over the years--I'm sure many already published books would not be published today.

How is your teaching going?

I was just politically correct and didn't mention the ones I didn't like, there were a lot;)

Congrats again on completing your Masters! It must be nice to be a little more self-directed in your reading again. I love the variety in your more directed reading though!

Mark,
I was amazed at what dogs can do when trained properly. I wish I had put more time into training my own, whose only trick is to sit when food is offered and race for the leash closet when tennis shoes are put on!

Edie,
Teaching is going great. It's an on-line course, so I miss getting to know the students, but I have a handle on the Blackboard computer part and can communicate with them. I had to make a video introduction of myself for the students, and watching it was painful. Do I really look and sound like that?? :)

I knew exactly what you meant with your "faulty" sentence construction, so there was no need to apologize, Diane!

Yes, there were books I read this summer too that I definitely did not like, even though I wanted to like them.

And I know exactly how you feel when you describe the pain of watching a video of yourself. I've thought, "Why don't people run away screaming when they hear/see me?" How can we have such a different perception of who we are than what is reality?
