Ten writers for children. All with something to say.

The loss of a great one...

I think anyone who loves children's books was sad today when they heard about the loss of Maurice Sendak. Many words have been said, and I won't add to them. I will just say that this is one of the first books I learned to read. And one of the first books I loved. Anyone else have a favorite?

Little Bear was the first book I learned to read... well the first book with chapters-- my first book was really, "Hop on Pop"- Dr. Seuss. I still have my Little Bear Books. I still love my Little Bear books!
Maurice Sendak is/was such an institution. It is hard to imagine him gone.

I just brought all my Little Bear books and every other Maurice Sendak book I have to my illustrator critique group today. I love the early Sendak books. They seem particularly fresh and spirited (less fussy than later work). Sendak's writing was good, but he was also fortunate to be paired with so many other terrific writers: Ruth Krauss, Else Holmelund Minarki, Sesyle Joslin, Randall Jarrell, Meindert Dejong, and George MacDonald to name a few. I think Sendak will remain a part of our lives.

I was not familiar with a lot of Sendak's (illustration) work until I read The Bat Poet, one of my favorites.

And if you didn't see him on The Colbert Report a month or two back, it's worth youtubing it or however you can get it online. Some pretty funny stuff.
