I love the early Sendak books. They seem particularly fresh and spirited (less fussy than later work). Sendak's writing was good, but he was also fortunate to be paired with so many other terrific writers: Ruth Krauss, Else Holmelund Minarki, Sesyle Joslin, Randall Jarrell, Meindert Dejong, and George MacDonald to name a few. I still have my Little Bear Books. I still love my Little Bear books!<br />Maurice Sendak is/was such an institution.
