It's a New Book!

Like Christy and Stephanie, I am excited to have a new book coming out in 2012. It's a Tiger!, illustrated by Jeremy Tankard, will be published by Chronicle in the fall of this year. I'll be sure to post the cover design as soon as it's available.

In the meantime, I'll show the cover of a book I read today at the library which is one of the funniest picture books I've read in a long time. Stuck, by Oliver Jeffers, is about a boy whose kite gets stuck in a tree. In an attempt to get his kite down, he throws his favorite shoe at it. Now both the kite and shoe are stuck. It's not often that a book genuinely surprises me, but this clever book did...and it made me laugh. If you've ever been so mad you could throw your shoe, check this one out.

I love Oliver Jeffers! I don't know STUCK so I will look for it at my library. And I cannot wait to see the cover for IT'S A TIGER! So excited for this book!

David, I'm so curious about your upcoming book, It's a Tiger!. Intriguing title. Can you tell us anything at all about it? Chronicle publishes wonderful books; how fun that you are on that list!

My fall 2010 print-ready book that never published (because Tricycle Press was eliminated by Random House), was called THE SHAPE TREE and was about items cummulatively stuck in a tree, so you can imagine I had mixed feelings when I saw that wonderful book, STUCK. Oliver Jeffers book IS great! I had been looking for a new home for my book, but now maybe I need to wait a long while or send it to another country.

That looks so cute. And I can't wait to see yours. Christy, that is such a bummer! I hope you find a home for yours.

Oh, Christy, I am so sorry to hear that painful story about THE SHAPE TREE. That is one of an author/illustrator's nightmares, to have his/her book superseded by another book with a similar theme, especially when your book was all set for the presses. Maybe it is not as similar as you think, and another publisher will pick it up sooner than you expect. I hope so for your case, and I'm glad you have plenty of other new books coming out now.

As far as It's a Tiger!, it's about the narrator trying to escape from a tiger who keeps popping up wherever the narrator runs. It's a very active book, and will hopefully lend itself to audience participation when read aloud.

David, that sounds adorable! Kids love to particpate in readings.

Thanks for your encouragement about The Shape Tree. I probably need to treat myself to a copy of Stuck, just to make sure they are plenty different. I thought my book could lend itself well to apps with interactive possibilities for kids to make things out of shapes. This weekend I'm going to an SCBWI event about apps. We'll see.

David,
I can't wait to see IT'S A TIGER! Maybe I can learn something about writing a "non-quiet" book. And I'll look for STUCK, too.

Best of luck to you, Christy, to find a home for THE SHAPE TREE!

David,
Can't wait to see your book. It sounds hilarious!! I love books where things go wrong for the narrator - that didn't come out right, did it?!

Great news about your upcoming book release, David. Congratulations. If It's A Tiger is even half as fun as the other books of yours I've read, we are all in for a fun ride! Assuming shoes-in-trees could also relate to golf clubs, I will have to check out Stuck, too!

If you've ever thrown a golf club in a tree, Mark, you will definitely relate to STUCK!
