Photos worth far more than a thousand words...

It is no wonder that the potato famine of Ireland has sparked so many stories, both fiction and nonfiction.  After viewing these haunting statues along the riverfront in Dublin, I am convinced there are many more stories to come.

Wow Edie-- what powerful sculptures. Are they permanent?

Haunting indeed.

We have a letter that my great, great, great (etc?) grandfather wrote from Ireland during the potato famine to his daughter who had emigrated to upstate NY to work in the textile mills. This diaspora fascinates me. I would love to research this more and write about it. I agree with Lauren; these are powerful sculptures, indeed!

Very powerful Edie. Those are my people on my grandma's side. Thank you.

My people, too, John and Christy. And, yes, Lauren, these statues are permanent pieces of art from what I understand. My daughter-in-law, Mica, and I spent over an hour looking at them. The photo was taken around 10:00 PM. I couldn't believe how late at night we were still wandering around the city of Dublin.
