Some beans to spill...

This has been a busy week. I'm the 2010-11 Harney County Writer in Residence, which means I'm in all the schools around here for the next several months, even some of the one-room schoolhouses. Yes, you heard me right. There are still one-room school houses here in Oregon for ranch kids who live in the middle of nowhere. Which means I've felt a bit removed from the writing community in Oregon, because everything seems to happen in Portland, about a 6 hour drive from where I live. But I'm feeling a bit more part of things today, because I just found out my picture book A Small Brown Dog with a Wet Pink Nose is a finalist for the Oregon Book Award.
You can read about all the finalists here: www.oregonlive.com and even vote for your favorite among the finalists, which will then be awarded the first ever Reader's Choice Award.
The awards ceremony is April 25th in Portland. I plan to go, but between now and then I have a few things to do, including school visit trips to Brazil and China. Not to mention I have a novel to write. So back to work for me...

Brazil and China? Tell us more. Life in the fast lane, Missy! Congrats, congrats. Oregon is a smart state; I'm sure they'll pick your book.

Wow, Stephanie! You don't seem to be removed from the writing community one small bit. Great awards and trips in store for you!

Wow! That's a lot of great news, Stephanie! Congratulations on being a finalist for the Oregon Book Award and for being the Harney County Writer in Residence (what a great idea, more counties should do that). I love visiting small rural schools, though I've never been to a one-room school before. What a fascinating experience, and what fantastic trips to look forward to! I wish you lots of stamina!

David, we just realized I'm not going to fit them all in this spring, so I've extended to the fall, which will be a gorgeous time to be in those far flung places closer to the Steens mountains...

Congratulations on the nomination for Small Brown Dog, Stephanie! I remember when you brought your laptop to class at Whidbey and showed us the original "galleys." That was years ago, but the originality and humor in the story have stayed with me. It deserves all the awards for which it's nominated!!
