Take Me Out to the Ball Game

I am just back from a Saint Paul Saints baseball game where I read a copy of my newly released (!) picture book, 1 + 1 = 5 and Other Unlikely Additions. As I took my place on the field where I read my book to a group of kids before the game started, I couldn't help but be amused. Back in elementary school I used to hide in the coatroom when it came time to play softball so I wouldn't have to take part. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I'd have anything to do with professional baseball. Fortunately today I didn't have to blindly swing at a ball or cower in right field; all I had to do was share my latest book with a group of young baseball and book fans, and marvel at how life pitches us some pleasant surprises.

I love this! Did you also throw out the first pitch?

Delightful! I bet there are many kids who could identify with your elementary school experience, and then would be encouraged by the way your life developed to this point.

What an exciting and unusual experience, David! Congratulations! I'll be looking for your book.

If I had thrown out the first pitch, Diane, the ball would not have even made it to home plate. But thanks for asking!
